Find answers to your questions about becoming a member and/or volunteering with Foster City Village below!
Is there an age limit for Foster City Village members?
We don’t have an age limit, but most of our members are aged 55 and above. We have 3 members over 100 years young!
What area does Foster City Village serve?
We serve older adults residing within the 94404 Zip Code, which includes all of Foster City and Mariners Island in San Mateo.
Is there a contract between the member and Foster City Village?
Yes, a membership agreement outlines the benefits of membership as well as the responsibilities of both the member and Foster City Village. The goal is to enable members to continue to live in their own homes and communities as they age, by providing easy access to important support services, along with social connection and activities.
Are there any requirements for becoming a member of Foster City Village?
Yes, a few. Foster City Village members must be ambulatory (albeit with a cane or walker) and cannot be afflicted with memory, emotional, or mental health problems. We are not a medical organization and do not offer medical advice, treatment, home care, or transport for those reliant on wheelchairs. As a result, some individual’s needs may be more extensive than we can meet as an organization, and one whose services are provided by volunteers.
How is Foster City Village different from the adult community center?
Foster City Village is a membership based non-profit organization fueled by local volunteers. We do partner with the local community center to provide Fitness classes to members and non-members, and we promote community events and activities by providing transportation for our members.
Will the membership dues be too much for some older adults to afford?

We offer a discounted membership for those in need. Please contact us and we will assess your eligibility for assisted membership.

How are volunteers selected and approved?
Volunteers complete an application and are interviewed by our Volunteer Coordinator. In addition, we run a criminal background check on every volunteer. For volunteers providing driving services, we also run a driving record check and verify automobile insurance.
Is there liability insurance to cover any mishaps resulting from the actions of a volunteer?
Yes, Foster City Village maintains comprehensive liability insurance.
If volunteers go inside a member’s home to help with light home maintenance, how will Foster City Village assure the safety and privacy of the member?
In addition to background checks, there are guidelines for volunteers on what they may and may not do when inside a member’s home. All of our volunteers are trained and sign a confidentiality agreement before they can volunteer.
What if a volunteer finds what he or she perceives to be a medical situation with a member?
If it’s an emergency, the volunteer will immediately call 911 and then notify the Foster City Village office for immediate follow-up with the member’s emergency contacts. For non-emergency issues, the volunteer will ask the member for the best way to help and follow through accordingly.
